The recently discovered interstellar object 3I/ATLAS, which is flying through the solar system, has begun to anomalously evolve, changing its color, according to Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb.
"The ATLAS team interprets this anomalous evolution as a transition from the scattering of sunlight by dust lifted from the reddened surface to the formation of small, optically bright ice particles, which changed the opacity of the plume of materials emitted by 3I/ATLAS," he wrote in his blog.
Previously, scientists at the Paranal Observatory in Chile noted a sharp increase in the release of cyanide and nickel on 3I/ATLAS, which caused it to change color from red to green.
The mysterious object was discovered in early July. Scientists were able to establish that it is from another star system and may be a comet. Its cloud of gas and dust, astrophysicists calculated, is about 24 kilometers in diameter. And its age is 7.5 billion.
Scientists note that 3I/ATLAS is 3 billion years older than the Sun. According to them, it may be the oldest comet in the history of observations. Loeb put forward a theory in late August that this object could be artificial, with a powerful energy source. It emits light like car headlights, which spreads for millions of kilometers.
